How to Search Lake County Court Records

Lake County court records are searched through Indiana MyCase, the statewide Odyssey public access portal. The county homepage links its "Find My Court Case" tool to the portal, and the Circuit Court page does the same. MyCase holds case data for the Lake Circuit Court, the Lake Superior Court divisions, and participating city and town courts. The portal warns that its data is not the official court record and may contain errors or omissions, so an official record must come from the court that keeps it.

Have your search details ready before you start. A case number gets you straight to a file. A full party name works too, but common names need a date or court to narrow them. The Indiana Judicial Branch site links the same tools statewide.

  1. Open the MyCase portal and pick the public case search.
  2. Enter a case number, or switch to a party name search.
  3. Filter by Lake County and by court or case type.
  4. Open a result to read the docket, parties, hearings, and financial entries.
  5. Ask the clerk for a certified copy when you need the official document.

The Indiana Judicial Branch homepage gathers case search, e-filing, and other public tools in one spot at the Indiana courts site.

Types of Lake County Court Records

Court records in Lake County split by the kind of case and the court that heard it. Civil and family files run through the Circuit Court and the Superior Court civil rooms. Criminal cases move through the Superior Court Criminal Division. Probate and guardianship matters sit in the Circuit Court, while juvenile cases stay in the Juvenile Division.

The list below groups the records most people search for.

  • Civil records - personal injury, contract and commercial disputes, foreclosures, collections, evictions, name changes, and protective orders.
  • Criminal records - charging documents, bonds, pleas, hearings, dispositions, and sentences.
  • Family records - divorce, child support, and related domestic relations cases.
  • Probate records - estates, wills, guardianships, and trusts.
  • Small claims and traffic - notice-of-claim cases and citation records.

Small claims sit in the Superior Court County Division, and the clerk publishes the starting forms for those cases. The forms page lists a Car Title Notice of Claim, a Money Owing Notice of Claim, and an Eviction Notice of Claim, plus a sample claim. Each small-claims file then builds the same way: a notice of claim, proof of service, a hearing, and a judgment or eviction order. You can reach those forms on the clerk forms page.

What Lake County Court Records Show

A case record reads field by field. It opens with the case number, the court, and the case type, then lists the parties and a running docket of every filing and hearing. Criminal and traffic files often add a financial section. The list of visible fields below mirrors what a typical public MyCase record returns.

Public Access Framework for Lake County Court Records

Indiana keeps court records open by default. The Access to Public Records Act, Indiana Code 5-14-3, covers county agency records and places the burden of proving secrecy on the agency. Court files, though, follow the Indiana Rules on Access to Court Records, which the Supreme Court adopted under its own authority and the public-records law. Rule 4 states that court records are open unless a rule, statute, or order excludes them.

Anyone can search MyCase without an account. For a certified copy, you contact the clerk and pay the copy and certification charges set by the office. Agency records held outside the courts go through a public-records request instead, with response timelines set by statute.

The Indiana Supreme Court posts the full access rules on the Rules on Access to Court Records page.

Those rules decide which Lake County court records show online and which stay sealed.

Note: Public access is the rule in Indiana, but the agency or court must justify any record it withholds from a requester.

Records That Are Sealed or Confidential in Lake County

Some files never reach public view. Juvenile, adoption, and CHINS records are restricted under Indiana law. Mental-health and medical records are excluded or redacted. Sealed and expunged matters may show as unavailable or not appear at all.

To see a sealed record, a member of the public may file a request or motion under Rule 9 of the access rules. Expungement runs under Indiana Code 35-38-9, which lets eligible arrests and convictions be sealed or restricted. The petition is filed in the county of conviction through the Clerk of the Lake Circuit/Superior Court, and waiting periods apply.

Tips for a Better Lake County Court Records Search

A few habits make a court records search faster and more accurate. The single best move is to start with a case number, because it skips the name-matching step entirely. When you only have a name, add what else you know. Small details cut a long results list down to the one case you want.

  1. Use the exact case number when you have it; it is the fastest route and avoids name collisions.
  2. For a criminal or traffic case, check the ticket, summons, bond paperwork, or notice to appear for the citation or case number.
  3. Narrow a common surname with a first name, filing date, court, or case type.
  4. If a case is missing online, call the clerk; older, sealed, expunged, juvenile, adoption, and mental-health records may not display.
  5. Do not rely only on MyCase for warrants; the sheriff keeps a separate active warrant search.

When the online file looks incomplete, the clerk is the backstop. The office keeps the full record and can confirm what the portal does not show.
